Building Alarms and Damages
Red Alerts
Red alerts are critical alerts in which immediate reaction is mandatory!
In our building the following red alerts may occur:
- Fire alarm.
- Signal: A loud sirene throughout the building.
- Reason: Fire detected automatically by smoke or temperature or manual alarm.
- Measure: Leave the building immediately through the next exit (either the stairs on the front side or the back side) and gather at the meeting point at the front side of the building to be counted. Please note that in case of a fire alarm the fire protection flaps in the building are closing as well as the support with inflammable gases (hydrogen, oxygene).
- Consequences: Usually, all fire protection flaps in the building automatically fall down. Please contact the RWTH fire department and ask them to set them up again. The oxygen and hydrogen supply from the gas system in the lab will be cut of. Please also check with the RWTH fire department how to restart them. The water cooling (machine cooling) will be switched off at the primary side. This means that the cooling water will flow but not be cooled anymore. It will consequently heat up until it stops due to inefficiency. The RWTH cooling unit at ZHV (Dez. 10) is to be called to switch it on remotely or come to MCh to restart it on the top floor.
- Machine cooling.
- Signal: Alarm light and beeper on the wall opposite the electric workshop.
- Reason: Pumps of internal machine cooling in the roof cabin are down, no cooling water flow in the MCh labs.
- Measure: First call security officer, then inform persons responsible for (sensible) machines (APT/FIB, JAMP, Kybele, Jarvis first). In case of absence of all security officers follow instructions on the wall next to alarm.
- Air liquidification alarm.
- Signal: Sirene and sign “Gasalarm” in the basement outside the air liquidification room.
- Reason: Low oxygen content detected in air liquidification room, presumably due to defect in liquification machine or storage containers.
- Measure: Leave the floor and call security officer immediately. Risk of low oxygen content in air.
Yellow Alerts
Yellow alerts are indicating technical alarms which require rapid but not immediate reaction. The following yellow alarms may occur:
- Technical gas alarm.
- Signal: Orange blinking light on analytics lab floor ceiling.
- Reason: One or more bottles of central technical gas supply (Ar, N2, O2, H2) empty.
- Measure: Exchange empty gas bottle in the gas storage area behind the building with a full one. Inform responsible person (Dr. Mráz).
- Central cooling water alarm.
- Signal: LED sign “Kühlwasser” in PVD labs is on.
- Reason: The central closed loop cooling water, supply for the whole building, backening the machine cooling, is off.
- Measure: Call security officer.
Green Alerts
Building Malfunctions
Any malfunctions of the building, e. g. doors not closing properly, leaking water sinks etc., have to be announced to the central RWTH Facility management. The managers will arrive upon call and will repair the stuff.
Please contact the mechanical or electrical workshop for general malfunctions where no building technology is involved. In case that the air ventilation, the water cooling system e. g. are not working, please contact Simon Münstermann immediately.
If none of the above persons is available, please phone the RWTH no. 116 to announce a malfunction.
