Nanoindenter

FIXME

Nanoindentation is carried out with a Hysitron TI-950 TriboIndenter at MCh. A diamond tip with special geometry (Berkovich, Cube Corner, Spherical) penetrates up to 10% of the coating thickness by force or displacement control with a performech control unit. The measurement consists of loading the sample, holding and unloading and Young's modulus and hardness of coatings are determined from the unloading part by the method of Oliver and Pharr. Maximum force and displacement values are 10 mN and 5 μm with resolution of 1 nN and 0.04 nm, respectively. Besides measurement of mechanical properties, the scanner can be used as atomic force microscope (AFM) to image the surface topography. Stress strain curves may be determined by employing sinusoidal loading concurrents with nanoDMA III (nanoscale Dynamic Mechanical Analysis).
