Health and Safety

General Health

As part of RWTH Aachen University, MCh encourages all staff members to keep general track on health. RWTH offers a braod range of University Sports, where every staff member may take part. Traditionally, staff members of MCh play football once a week, mostly on Fridays (see MCh Sports). On the target for reducing the annual impact on flue-like diseases on MCh staff we installed hand desinfection spenders in the rest rooms. We strongly recommend to use these regularly.

Security

At RWTH Aachen security is maintained by the RWTH Security Guards located in the main building.

The RWTH Guards are checking buidlings by night and are available 24/7. The automatic main building doors are open from 8:00 to 17:00, generally. Outside this time you will need a key to enter the building.

The automatic floor doors on the 2nd and 3rd floor are activated in the morning around 7:00 and are deactivated in the afternoon, generally around 16:30.

In case of emergency please call 113.

The following persons are responsible for security issues at MCh (last update: May 2024):

All MCh security officers are regularly trained in First Aid.

Safety

Work safety is essential for MCh since we are a research institute where experimental setups are continuously modified and a number of potentially hazardous materials are used in the labs. As already stated, new personnel (disregarding whether it is a HiWi, Ph. D., or a new workshop worker) cannot start working in the MCh laboratories prior to receiving the safety instructions fully covering their intended field of work. Please make appointments with the following persons (last updated: May 2024):

Safety Required for Responsible person
General work at MCh Markus Momma, head of vacuum technology
Lab/electric Bernd Conrad, control engineering
Radiation work with XRD etc. Bernd Conrad, control engineering
Laser work with MOS etc. Bernd Conrad, control engineering
Chemical work in labs Clio Azina, group leader of Nanostructures and Complex Materials

Safety data sheets (SDS) for compounds used within MCh (both laboratories, and workshop) can be found on our internal server (currently “under construction”, May 2024):

K:\Organization\General organization data\Working Safety\Chemicals_and_storage\safety data sheets\

Most of SDS are only in German; therefore, do not hesitate to ask for help if you do not understand something! If you find there is an SDS missing, contact people responsible for handling chemicals and/or chemical safety instructions - see persons responsible for chemical safety or chemical laboratory - to discuss further steps.
